The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences recently awarded a grant to researchers from N.C. State University to study the extent of GenX exposure in New Hanover County residents.
While Chemours has ceased discharge of GenX into the Cape Fear River, researchers are still finding measurable amounts of GenX in the drinking water.
Those involved in the study hope to gain a better understanding of the extent of GenX exposure in affected residents, so as to inform future decisions on how to address the contamination issue.
Who can participate?
The study will include 400 participants who must meet the following criteria:
- Primary drinking water source in home is provided by the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority
- Lived in New Hanover County for the past 12 months
- Older than 6 years of age
- Willing to provide blood and urine samples
- Willing to complete questionnaire information
Pregnant women are not eligible for the study.
What will participation involve?
If selected to participate, individuals will have to complete a brief questionnaire, provide blood and urine samples, record their height and weight measurements, and approve sampling of drinking water in their home.
The samples taken from participants and their drinking water will undergo testing to determine if GenX and other toxic chemicals are present. Blood and urine samples will also undergo clinical testing.
Participants will be notified of the testing results by February, and a general report will be provided to the Lower Cape Fear Area community at the study’s conclusion.
